Ok, so Myrna met me in front of my house a few weeks ago while she was canvassing. I asked her three questions about our district.

1. How will the Board of Supes make the school district more accountable for focusing its budget on students instead of office employees?

2. How will you encourage small businesses to move into dist. 11?

3. How will you focus the budget to pay more attention to our District?

Her answer to all three: We need to have a better relationship with the police.

WHAT?!

Seriously though. I asked her what she meant by that, but she just reiterated that if we have a better relationship with the police in SF than all these issues I brought up will fall into place. She did even tell me how. She couldn't. She has no idea what she's talking about.

Myrna Lim is more interested in how she will look when she's elected than what she can do for us.

She did say that she wants the city to have more businesses coming in. When I asked her about more jobs in this district, she said that we need a better relationship with the police.
Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.
A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

I'm sure that like us you must be receiving a bunch of political junk mail. Amidst all the crap, there are few flyers that have stood out as being particularly aggressive and despicable. You may have noticed them too. They are all anti-Sandoval, all deforming or exagerating facts, and playing with the most "emotional" concepts (AIDS, children, antisemitism...). The most shocking flyer had the picture of a swastika tag on one side and was accusing Sandoval of being antisemite.

I am not a huge Sandoval supporter, but I find these flyers extremely disturbing, not only because they play on the emotions of the reader without giving straight facts, but mostly because there is NO indication of who sends those. There is no name, no association mentionned, no particular cause. There is only an address, 4 Dorman ave, which is not even in our district! The only business at this place is a graphic design company (probably the one that designed all these). But I can't find any information about them (Clymer Direct COmmunications Group).

Does anybody know anything about these. Has anybody else noticed those flyers? They are pure slander and it really shocks me. I'd like to give my 2 cents to the coward that sends them.

Let me tell you why.

It's mostly about the fact the other candidates are so very unprepared to take care of our district.

I hosted a candidates forum at Balboa high school a few weeks ago. All the District 11 candidates confirmed they would attend. Myrna Lim asked me a dozen times if the media would be there. Only Sandoval, Reynolds-silverberg, and Bonilla showed up.

I decided right then and there that obviously these three cared about the district and the Balboa student body who, by the way, attended in the evening on a school night.

Bonilla showed himself to be a candidate who was more interested in more police on the streets to act as enforcers rather than beat cops. He is not for officers in the schools (these officers act more friendly beat cops the students trust than cops looking to make a bust). He is also for corporate welfare in SF and in favor of big box stores rather than small businesses.

Reynolds-Silverberg told me herself that she has no intention of winning, she just feels that a neighborhood leader such as herself needs to be on the ballot so the district is aware of issues that the other candidates aren't talking about. However, at the forum, she hardly spoke at all. Perhaps she was tired.

Sandoval made a comment that I truly appreciated. He said that if any candidate tells you that they can fix the problems in our district in four years, they just want your vote. Most of the work he has done has been esthetic. The parks are looking cleaner, Ocean Ave. is looking cleaner, etc. While on the budget committee he didn't take Newsome to taske regarding cutting the pork. However, he is the most progressive of the candidates, he knows that this district has the highest home ownership, the most diverse ethnicities, and it's the most spread out. This is not an easy district to lead. The city rarely pays attention to us.

I believe Sandoval has done head and shoulders above the work that Amos Brown ever did in this district. I don't believe that Sandoval is in the pocket of Newsome. He backed Gonzalez for mayor. He told me personally that this will be his last term if elected. He wishes to spend more time with his family.

Sandoval is the best choice for our district. I didn't even mention the Ocean Ave. corridor which is to be revitalized by the same group that did the Fruitvale section of Oakland.
